Scaling and Polishing: The Gateway to a Healthy Smile

What is Scaling and Polishing?

Scaling and polishing are two of the most important dental treatments prescribed for maintaining the healthiness of the oral cavity. Through scaling, very careful removal of plaque, calculus or tartar, and stains are affected from the surfaces of the teeth, particularly around the gum line and between the teeth where ordinary brushing and flossing usually miss. Smoothing of the tooth surfaces by polishing after scaling makes it difficult for plaque formation, and at the same time, surface stains are removed, leaving your teeth looking better.

Why is it Important?

With time, plaque—a sticky film of bacteria—has the potential to harden into tartar, which one cannot remove by normal brushing. Further, building up of tartar may result in diseases of the gums like gingivitis or periodontitis, bad odors, and even caries. Regular scaling keeps your teeth clean and your gums free from inflammation and infection. On the other hand, polishing leaves the teeth smooth and clean and gives them a more polished and shiny appearance.

The Benefits of Scaling and Polishing:

  • Preventing Gingivitis and Periodontitis: Scaling removes tartar and bacteria, hence reducing the chances of gingivitis and periodontitis.
  • Fresh Breath: The deposition of tartar and formation of plaque can cause bad breath. Regular cleaning removes the very cause of this problem.
  • Brighter Smile: The polishing process removes surface stains caused by foods, drinks, and smoking, hence leaving you with whiter and brighter teeth.
  • Smoother Teeth: Polishing smoothens the enamel and makes it difficult for bacteria to adhere and build up plaque.
  • Improved Overall Health: Oral health has been related to overall health. Regular cleanings reduce heart disease, diabetes complications, and other systemic issues.

The Process:

Scaling: Using special tools called manual scalers or ultrasonic instruments, your dentist or hygienist will remove plaque and tartar above and below the gum line.

Polishing: After scaling, a high-powered brush is used with a gritty polishing paste to remove surface Vstains and smooth out the enamel. This leaves your teeth feeling clean and shiny.

Final Rinse: The process is completed with an overall rinse to clear any remaining material.
How Often Should Scaling and Polishing Be Done? Most dentists advise professional scaling and polishing every six months for healthy teeth and gums. However, some people suffering from any gum disease or having excessive deposition of tartar need their teeth cleaned more frequently.
